A Friday in green, and Fridays are for penance all year, not just in Lent. In November the Church invites you to offer that penance for the souls in Purgatory. The companion saint is Bl. Thomas Ochia Jihyoe, a Japanese priest who sneaked back into a country where being Catholic could get you killed, to bring the Sacraments to prisoners. Things to do: pick a Friday sacrifice, name a dead person it is for, and fold a paper crane while you tell his story.

A look ahead

A few feasts, recipes, and traditions on the way. Notice what interests you now; choose only when the day arrives.

Tomorrow, Saturday, is the last easy day for the Holy Souls cemetery visit (the indulgence runs through Sunday, November 8), and Saturday afternoon Confession completes it. Tomorrow also starts the family almsgiving jar for Advent, so find an empty jar tonight; Thursday’s found coin goes in first. Sunday, November 8, dinner is by candlelight or oil lamp for the parable of the ten virgins; make sure you have candles.
