All Saints
A Holy Day of Obligation on which we celebrate the Church Triumphant—all the Saints in Heaven.
Attend Mass for All Saints
The feast is celebrated on the same day in both the old and new calendars. If you’d like to attend a Traditional Latin Mass for All Saints, check out a Traditional Latin Mass near you here. Offer your Mass intentions for the universal Church and in thanksgiving for the lives of the saints who inspire and intercede for us.
Eat All Saints Cakes
In many cultures, special foods are prepared for All Saints’ Day, often called “All Saints Cakes” or “Soul Cakes.” The symbolize prayer offerings for the souls of loved ones. These lightly spiced, small cakes are simple to make and are a beautiful way to honor loved ones who have gone before us. Share them with family, neighbors, or anyone you’d like to remember in prayer. Here is a recipe:
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice (optional)
- 1/2 cup currants or raisins
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 egg
- Extra sugar for sprinkling on top
Instructions:
- Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Prepare the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice. Rub the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
- Add Currants: Stir in the currants or raisins, which represent prayers for the souls of the faithful departed.
- Mix the Wet Ingredients: In a small bowl, beat the egg and milk together. Add the wet mixture to the flour mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Form the Soul Cakes: Divide the dough into small balls (about the size of golf balls) and flatten each ball slightly to form rounds. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Score and Sprinkle: Use a knife to lightly score a cross on top of each cake, symbolizing the connection to All Saints. Sprinkle a bit of sugar over each cake.
- Bake: Bake for 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool on a wire rack.
- Serve and Pray: Serve the Soul Cakes warm. As each person takes a cake, offer a simple prayer for the souls of loved ones or a quick Eternal Rest Prayer:
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
Soul Cakes are delicious reminders of the communion of saints and the prayers we offer for the departed. They can also be shared with friends and neighbors as a prayerful gesture of charity.
Light a Blessed Candle and Pray the Rosary Each Night of the All Saints Octave
The Octave of All Saints extends the celebration for eight days, ending on November 8. Each night, light a blessed candle and pray the Rosary, dedicating each set of mysteries to different saints who have touched your life or the life of the Church. Consider focusing on saints associated with each mystery, such as:
- Joyful Mysteries: Saints who embody childlike faith and humility, like St. Thérèse of Lisieux.
- Sorrowful Mysteries: Saints who endured suffering for Christ, such as St. John of the Cross.
- Glorious Mysteries: Saints of hope and resurrection, like St. Mary Magdalene.
- Luminous Mysteries: Saints of mission and teaching, such as St. Dominic and St. Ignatius of Loyola.
Start a 54-Day Rosary Novena
The 54-day Rosary Novena is a powerful devotion that includes 27 days of petition and 27 days of thanksgiving. Begin the novena on All Saints’ Day with an intention dedicated to personal sanctity, the holiness of family members, and the strengthening of the Church. Pray one Rosary each day, meditating on the mysteries and asking the saints for guidance. This novena is traditionally prayed without interruption, making it a powerful journey of faith and perseverance.
Pray for Souls in Purgatory on All Souls’ Day (November 2)
Prepare for All Souls’ Day by praying for the souls in purgatory on November 1. Between noon and midnight on All Souls’ Day, visit a church or cemetery, if possible, to gain indulgences for the deceased. Pray an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be six times (one for each decade of a six-decade Rosary) for the poor souls in purgatory. Offer the Eternal Rest Prayer throughout the day:
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.
This simple act of devotion reminds us of the communion of saints and the interconnectedness of the Church on earth, in heaven, and in purgatory.
Read “The Golden Legend” on the Lives of Saints
For deeper inspiration, read about the lives of various saints in The Golden Legend, compiled by Jacobus de Voragine. This classic collection provides accounts of the lives and miracles of saints and martyrs. Reading these stories aloud with your family is a beautiful way to reflect on the virtues of the saints. Consider focusing on one saint each night during the Octave.
Listen to Sacred Music
Listening to sacred music can lift the spirit and create an atmosphere of reverence. Consider playing:
- Litany of the Saints: A sung version of the Litany invokes the names of saints throughout history, helping us feel their presence and intercession.
- Gregorian Chant or Polyphonic Settings of the Mass: If possible, find a recording of a polyphonic or Gregorian chant setting for All Saints’ Day.
Encourage family members to listen quietly and meditate on the lives of the saints, or use the music as a background while you read about saints together.
Pray the Litany of the Saints
The Litany of the Saints is a powerful prayer that invokes saints by name, asking for their intercession. Gather your family, kneel together, and pray the litany. Each saint named is a reminder of the holiness we are all called to. Conclude with this prayer:
Almighty and everlasting God, who hast granted us to honor in one solemnity the merits of all Thy Saints: we beseech Thee, that, as our prayers are multiplied by so many advocates, Thou wouldst grant us, through Thy propitiation, the desired abundance of Thy mercy. Amen
All Saints Novena
Pray especially starting on October 23 and ending on October 31.
Let us begin, In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Antiphon: O All ye Saints of God, vouchsafe to intercede for our salvation, and for that of all persons.
V. Be glad in our Lord, and rejoice ye just.
R. And Glory all ye right of Heart.
Let us Pray. Protect Thy people, O Lord: And, as we confide in the patronage of Thy Apostles, Peter and Paul, and of Thy other Apostles, so preserve and defend us continually. May all Thy Saints, we beseech Thee, O Lord, everywhere assist us; that whiles we celebrate their merits, we may find their patronage. Grant us Thy peace in our time, and drive away all wickedness from Thy Church. Direct our ways, actions and desires, and those of all Thy servants, in the prosperity of Thy saving conduct: Grant to our benefactors eternal blessings, and to the faithful departed, everlasting rest, through our Lord Jesus Thy Son. Amen.
V. O Lord, hear my Prayer.
R. And let my Cry come unto Thee.
V. Bless us our Lord.
R. Thanks be to God.
V. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace.
R. Amen.
O Blessed Saints of Paradise, the glorious Citizens of Heaven, as I render most humble thanks to God for all the good He hath done you; so I beseech you to remember me in your prayers, and obtain for me the entire remission of my sins, the amendment of my life, and imitation of your good spirit, and holy graces, that I may be perfectly reconciled to my Savior, and always please Him, but especially I recommend to you the hour of my death, that by your holy intercession my soul may depart this world in the grace of God, and immediately come to Life Everlasting. Amen.
