An ordinary Thursday in green, and the Gospel is two of Jesus’ best-loved stories: the lost sheep and the lost coin. Heaven rejoices more over one sinner who comes back than over ninety-nine who never left. The companion saint today is St. Guido Maria Conforti, the Italian boy who listened to Jesus in front of a crucifix every morning before school. Things to do: hide a coin, hunt for it, tell the parable, and say the Act of Contrition together.

A look ahead

A few feasts, recipes, and traditions on the way. Notice what interests you now; choose only when the day arrives.

Tomorrow, Friday, is a day of penance: decide tonight what the family gives up, and for which deceased person it is offered. You will also fold a paper crane, so have a square of paper per child. Saturday, November 7: the almsgiving jar starts (any clean jar) and the last easy chance for the cemetery visit for the Holy Souls indulgence, with Confession the same day. Sunday, November 8, dinner is by candlelight for the parable of the ten virgins; have candles or a lamp ready.
