Ask Peter Kreeft

The 100 Most Interesting Questions He's Ever Been Asked

About this item

I've given thousands of lectures around the country to engaged, thoughtful, curious university and church audiences and have always made it a practice to allow for as many questions as possible. Here are the most interesting ones I've been asked, and the answers I gave.

Of course, as real questions from real people, they're an eclectic mix, ranging from questions about God and sex and sin and suffering to those about heaven, my favorite movies, even surfing! Some of the questions and answers are easy, some hard; some profound, some silly; some tragic, some funny; most of them thought-provoking and all of them, I hope, entertaining.

Join me now as I answer scores of questions I've been asked over the decades, including the following:

  • Why are you a Catholic?
  • Why are so many philosophers weird?
  • Why do you feel the need to bring God into everything?
  • What is your favorite method of prayer?
  • Why does the Church resist women's ordination?
  • Why can't divorced and remarried Catholics receive Communion?
  • Why is the Catholic Church obsessed with sex?
  • Why does the Church still forbid birth control?
  • Why not trial marriages — living together?
  • Why can't Catholics believe in reincarnation?

This book is a college of philosophical knowledge
Boston College professor Peter Kreeft has taught philosophy for more than 50 years, and he has given dozens of lectures around the country to university and church audiences. This book lists 100 of the most interesting questions he has ever been asked, and gives his wise, profound answers. This book is a rare jewel of precious insights and real wisdom. Here is a quick summary of just a few of those questions and his answers: Can fiction be true or false? Yes, fiction can indeed be true or false. True stories tell us that there is hope and a real meaning to life. True stories tell us we have souls, and that there is a real morality, and that our souls face salvation or damnation. Why shouldn’t couples live together before getting married? Marriage is a vow of lifelong fidelity and trust. Marriage is a sacred vow to both God and one’s spouse. Breaking that vow does extreme damage to others, so don’t get married unless you intend to keep your promises. And note how morality, religion, marriage and family all go together. How can I tell if I love someone? The surest test of love is sacrifice. If you are trying to decide whether to marry someone, ask yourself if you are willing to sacrifice yourself for the rest of your life for that person. If you are willing to sacrifice yourself, then marry that person. If not, don’t. But don’t marry someone because you think that person will provide for your needs. And you should be willing to sacrifice yourself for your children. Marriage is a high and holy job. Ask Kreeft puts it, “The essence of morality is unselfishness, charity, the gift of self to others.” Why don’t people have deep friendships anymore? The biggest reason is that marriage is the most complete and intimate friendship, and marriage is in trouble. Why does the Catholic Church forbid divorce? Because the Catholic Church loves children, who are terribly hurt by divorce. What can we do to heal our culture? Be good Christians. Kreeft then notes that “happiness comes only through unselfishness, never through selfishness.” One of the questions asked Peter Kreeft what were his favorite jokes, and he lists several. He mentions that life is hilariously funny, which is true. The main reason to buy this book is Peter Kreeft. He is one of the best Catholic philosophers in the world, and he writes clearly, concisely and profoundly.
